I'm a longtime magazine editor, essayist, writing teacher, and freelance editor/manuscript consultant. The bulk of my career has been at Washingtonian magazine in Washington, DC, where I'm currently senior managing editor. I've taught workshops at the Writer’s Center in Bethesda, Maryland—primarily in the personal essay—for more than 25 years. My own writing has appeared in Washingtonian, the New York Times, the Washington Post, Newsday, and the North American Review, among others. My work has been cited three times among the notable essays of the year in The Best American Essays.
Lately I've been writing and publishing contemporary haiku poetry.
